/ Alstede Farms
1 Alstede Farms Lane,
Chester New Jersey
Public Transportation: Take New Jersey Transit to the Gladstone station and then a taxi or FREE courtesy shuttle to the farm.
By Car: 50 minutes from Manhattan
This farm is about a 50 minute car ride from Manhattan. One of the biggest farms I have visited, thus far. Alstede is open daily for U-Pick Apples. They have rows and rows of mature apple trees in every variation you could imagine. In addition to apple picking, this farm also offers special attractions. They have a corn maze, pony rides, hayrides, a bounce house as well as farm animals to feed. If you go early enough in the season, you are also able to pick your own vegetables in the back of the property. With tight COVID restrictions, make sure to check the website or call ahead to grab your PYO tickets before making the trek out there.
Summary: Great for kids, families or someone who wants to roam a large farm with endless varieties of apples.
/ Twin Star Orchards
155 N Ohioville Road
New Paltz, New York 12561, US
Public Transportation: N/A
By Car: 90 minutes from Manhattan
Although they do not harvest Fuji Apples at this orchard, it still remains one of my favorites. If your goal is to get out of the city and have relaxing day upstate, this place allows you to apple pick and chill. Twin Star Orchards does not charge an entrance fee. You pay based on the size of your apple bag. The prices were very reasonable in comparison to Alstede. Before, after or during, you have the luxury of enjoying wood-fired pizzas, burgers, beers, wine and fresh made Cider Donuts. Don't forget the donuts, they were the best part of the entire day. The farm offered multiple picnic tables and space to spread out. Twin Star is perfect for large groups looking to hang on the property for the day, dogs are welcome.
Summary: Great for adults or people with animals or large groups. Younger orchard with smaller trees. The property felt quaint and family run. Added bonus, fresh pizza and donuts served.
/ Sun High Orchards
19 Canfield Ave
Randolph, NJ 07869
Public Transportation: N/A
By Car: 55 minutes from Manhattan
Although the height of apple picking season is early-mid September, I always have to wait or make a second trip in the middle of October to go back for a few boxes of Fuji Apples. We decided on Sun High Orchards, because of its' close proximity to the city.
Summary: Small family farm over 70 years old. In addition to apples, you can feed some animals or search for the perfect pumpkin. Sun High has several apple varieties, plus, the trees were in good shape (no bugs). Donuts were meh, but the apple turnover was great!
